Brother Sid is a fictional account of the bright, abbreviated life of iconic southern poet Sidney Lanier. From college he is sent to war, and from war to prison. Afterward, neither reconstruction nor broken romance derails him for long. Lanier juggles ill health, poverty and great promise by balancing on his friends and the remarkable gifts God gave him. Decades later, a woman in her finals days sees Sidney Lanier as a man worth remembering for his steadfast pursuit of improbable dreams, some of which even came true.

I really appreciate an effort like this: It admittedly involves a lot of conjecture--writing from the perspective of a long-dead person who can't answer questions about what they may or may not have been thinking--but I think this was an intellectually honest and humane effort. The writing showed a lot of empathy; not completely non-critical of the subject, but again, honest. I felt like I was transported "there" a bit. I never lost interest. A couple of reviewers have cited problems with the tempo, but I'd vote it was just right. The quality of the writing itself was unusually high, as well.

Brother Sid A Novel of Sidney Lanier edition by May Lamar Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I must say that I never knew much about Sidney Lanier's life. After reading "Brother Sid," I feel as if I have a connection with this poet and what he went through. Author May Lamar portrays everyday life, battle scenes, and the tragedy of tuberculosis with grace and talent, allowing the reader to connect with her characters and time period. Very well done!
Way more fun than a history book! An interesting take on a southern gent. Thanks May. I'm looking forward to you joining us for book club.
The book is well written, it just doesn't move fast enough. I think it is very good for her first novel!
Disappointed. Didn't finish it. I love Sidney Lanier, and I wish she had just written another biography from a fresh viewpoint. There were points of interest, and she writes well enough, but the plot seemed disjointed to me--flashing back and forth in time. Not compelling, not convincing.
Loved the book,,, it's a biography of Sidney Lanier although dramatized in a very clever "novel" form.
I've been interested in the life of Sidney Lanier since I first read his poem "The Marshes of Glynn." Ms. Lamar brings him and his era to life very well. The modern day parallel story was interesting, but also a bit of a distraction. I do wish the book had covered more of his later life. His early life and involvement in the Civil War was very detailed, but after he returned from the War, the narrative became almost perfunctory. I didn't understand why the author ended when she did; it was almost as if she just got tired of writing.
Although I've long been familiar with Lanier's poetry, I knew little about his personal life. This book is fiction, of course, but its factual basis helped me understand the man better. Even more enlightening, to me, was the book's perspective on the U.S. Civil War. I've read and studied a lot of history, but this story gave me a different view of life in the South during that great conflict.

The story-within-a-story device was effective, too, adding a bit of [almost] whimsy without detracting from the main theme. I liked it.
